{"id":24824,"date":"2025-04-10T16:58:59","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T20:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/?post_type=blog22&#038;p=24824"},"modified":"2025-06-17T16:41:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T20:41:16","slug":"canadian-federal-election-2025","status":"publish","type":"blog22","link":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/canadian-federal-election-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Federal Election 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24827 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1-2-1024x269.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1-2-1024x269.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1-2-300x79.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1-2.png 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>On April 28, 2025, people in Canada went to the polls for a federal election during a tumultuous time in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Our new government will need to navigate through a number of recent disruptions to the world economy\u00a0that has included the dismantling of crucial aid programs that support the prevention and treatment of HIV worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, provincial governments across the country are defunding and restricting harm reduction services\u00a0and scaling back on promising evidence-based services that are saving lives.<\/p>\n<p>At present, Canada is the only G7 country with rising HIV rates, with the latest data indicating that there were more than 2,400 new HIV diagnoses reported in 2023, an increase of 35% compared with 2022.<\/p>\n<p>We can still advocate for a government that upholds and actively promotes health and human rights, and that is exactly what the HIV Legal Network will continue to do!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On Friday, April 11, the HIV Legal Network\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/letters-to-candidates-2025-canadian-federal-election\/?lang=en\">wrote to the party leaders in the Canadian Federal election<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0key questions on their party\u2019s positions on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HIV Funding<\/li>\n<li>Access to HIV Treatment, Care, and Prevention<\/li>\n<li>HIV Criminalization<\/li>\n<li>Drug Policy<\/li>\n<li>Sex Work<\/li>\n<li>Prison Health<\/li>\n<li>Immigration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read the responses from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/2025-election-candidate-questions-response-from-the-bloc-quebecois\/?lang=en\">Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois here<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/2025-election-candidate-questions-response-from-the-green-party-of-canada\/?lang=en\">Green Party of Canada here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We have yet to hear back from the Conservative Party, Liberal Party and NDP and will share their responses when we receive them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-24826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2-1-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2-1-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>You can view the <strong>Liberal Party platform<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal.ca\/plan\/\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Find the Liberal pledge to invest\u00a0$500 million in drug treatment programs <a href=\"https:\/\/liberal.ca\/mark-carneys-liberals-to-protect-and-modernize-canadas-public-health-care-system\/\">here<\/a>. The Liberal Party platform does not contain any references to HIV, the rights of sex workers, or relevant immigration policy.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Conservative Party platform<\/strong> is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservative.ca\/change\/?utm_content=2025-04-22Platform%20release%20Conservative%20Plan%20for%20ChangeCampaign%20CID_81d6144c4cd7a5090a61f00057913086&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=cpc_cmf&amp;utm_campaign=2025-04-22Platform%20release%20Conservative%20Plan%20for%20ChangeCampaign\">here<\/a>, and you can find specifics on the Conservative Party\u2019s pledge to fund 50,000 treatment and recovery spaces, cut funding to safe supply programs, and institute lifetime prison sentences for people possessing more than 40 mg of Fentanyl <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservative.ca\/change\/bring_our_loved_ones_home_drug_free\/\">here<\/a>. The Conservative Party has also informed the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers that <a href=\"https:\/\/ucco-sacc-csn.ca\/news\/political-parties-answer-our-questions\/\">it will discontinue the Prison Needle Exchange Program if elected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Find the <strong>NDP platform<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndp.ca\/campaign-commitments\">here<\/a>. Online materials provided by the NDP do not make reference to HIV, drug policy, sex work or relevant immigration information. Most candidates participate in community debates, and they will often come right to your door to ask for your vote. Here are some questions that you can ask them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will you and your government follow the evidence and consensus that the laws criminalizing HIV non-disclosure must be reformed?<\/li>\n<li>Do you and your government support the decriminalization of drug possession for personal use?<\/li>\n<li>Will you and your government work to make it easier to access safe supply and safe consumption services?<\/li>\n<li>Will you and your government commit to properly funding the HIV response, including HIV prevention and support initiatives, in Canada?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Connect on Social Media <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Social media can be a great way to connect with candidates and your community. Here are some sample messages that you can share to ask questions of your local politicians and raise awareness among your fellow constituents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People living with HIV have waited for far too long. Canada\u2019s next government must end the criminalization of people living with HIV. It\u2019s beyond time for change. #cdnpoli #elxn2025<\/li>\n<li>Will you work to end the failed War on Drugs @CANDIDATE? I am voting for a candidate that puts forward drug policy that centres the health and human rights of people who use drugs. Will you be the one? #cdnpoli #elxn2025<\/li>\n<li>Any healthcare platform must address the chronic underfunding of HIV support and prevention programs by successive Canadian governments.
