But in reality, HIV\u00a0criminalization:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>undermines effective public health initiatives, such as HIV testing, counselling and support, and partner notification;<\/li>\n<li>creates a false sense of security that the law can and will protect people from HIV infection;<\/li>\n<li>contradicts the message that every person is responsible for their own sexual health; and<\/li>\n<li>leads to human rights abuses by increasing the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re working to limit the negative consequences of HIV criminalization by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>intervening in precedent-setting cases and providing support to defence attorneys and people living with HIV;<\/li>\n<li>engaging relevant policy-makers in developing guidance for police and prosecutors;<\/li>\n<li>helping community-based HIV organizations to understand the legal landscape; and<\/li>\n<li>providing comment and assistance to journalists reporting on this issue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:1px;border-color:#ccc\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-row\">\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-3 our-work-news-one\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<div class=\"our-work-news-image\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1.png)\"><\/div>\n<h3>Know Your Rights: HIV Criminalization<\/h3>\n<p class=\"our-work-news-content\">This guide was prepared by the HIV Legal Network to answer some common questions about HIV disclosure and the criminal law in Canada.
