{"id":16966,"date":"2019-07-11T11:49:43","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T15:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aidslaw.ca\/site\/?p=16966"},"modified":"2022-09-29T15:42:56","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T19:42:56","slug":"prison-based-needle-and-syringe-programs","status":"publish","type":"publication22","link":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/prison-based-needle-and-syringe-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Prison-Based Needle and Syringe Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"Acknowledging the health benefits of needle and syringe programs in prison, the Correctional\u00a0Service Canada (CSC) announced on May 14th, 2018, that it would implement a prison needle\u00a0exchange program (PNEP) at two federal institutions in June 2018 as \u201cthe initial stage of a\u00a0phased approach to strengthen its ongoing efforts to prevent and manage infectious disease\u00a0in federal penitentiaries and in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since CSC\u2019s PNEP announcement, <strong>misinformation about these programs has also circulated<\/strong>, questioning the benefits of such programs and their necessity in Canada.
