{"id":18977,"date":"2020-10-14T14:19:35","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T18:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/?p=18977"},"modified":"2022-09-30T00:35:40","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T04:35:40","slug":"comic-no-police-at-overdoses-good-samaritan-drug-overdose-act","status":"publish","type":"publication22","link":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/comic-no-police-at-overdoses-good-samaritan-drug-overdose-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Comic: No police at overdoses (Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act)"},"content":{"rendered":"In 2017, the Canadian government passed the\u00a0<em>Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act,<\/em>\u00a0a law meant to provide certain legal\u00a0protections for people who witness an overdose in Canada and call 911 for emergency assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Janet Butler-McPhee and Sandra Ka Hon Chu of the HIV Legal Network partnered with Emily van der Meulen at Ryerson University on a\u00a0new research study\u00a0with people who use drugs, looking at the Good Samaritan law and whether it is working as intended. You can find our preliminary research findings report, published in June 2020,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"..\/the-good-samaritan-drug-overdose-act-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ineffective\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This comic illustrates one of our important findings:\u00a0<strong>that while overdoses are a medical emergency, police are often attending overdose\u00a0scenes \u2013\u00a0with negative consequences for people who use drugs \u2013\u00a0despite the fact that police presence has\u00a0not\u00a0been requested nor is it advocacy at the HIV Legal Network, where she works on HIV-related human rights issues concerning prisons, drug policy, sex work, women, and immigration.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"author-info\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Janet Butler-McPhee\u00a0is the director of communications and advocacy at the HIV Legal Network. She is the principal investigator on the research project that inspired this comic.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"author-info\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Emily van der Meulen\u00a0is a professor of criminology at Ryerson University. She conducts research on the criminalization of sex work, prison and community-based harm reduction, and surveillance.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"author-info\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Nicole Burton and Hugh Goldring\u00a0are an artist\/writer team who work full time adapting research with social justice themes into comics.
