{"id":357,"date":"2002-02-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-28T00:41:30","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2022-09-25T20:51:41","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T00:51:41","slug":"injection-drug-use-hivaids-and-hcv-brief-to-the-house-of-commons-special-committee-on-non-medical-use-of-drugs","status":"publish","type":"publication22","link":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/injection-drug-use-hivaids-and-hcv-brief-to-the-house-of-commons-special-committee-on-non-medical-use-of-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Injection Drug Use, HIV\/AIDS, and HCV: Brief to the House of Commons Special Committee on Non-Medical Use of Drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"The focus of this submission to the House of Commons Special Standing Committee on Non-Medical Use of Drugs is on questions relating to harm reduction and on questions concerning injection drug use in Canada, specifically as they relate to HIV\/AIDS.<\/p>\n<p>We first discuss the extent to which Canada&#8217;s drug laws and policies contribute to the harms associated with drug use, in particular in the context of HIV\/AIDS and HCV.<\/p>\n<p>We then discuss existing educational programs aimed at preventing or reducing the consumption of illicit drugs in Canada, suggesting that much of the education provided is inaccurate and ineffective.<\/p>\n<p>We continue by discussing proposals to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>enhance needle exchange programs;<\/li>\n<li>increase access to treatment options including methadone maintenance;<\/li>\n<li>undertake clinical trials of prescribed heroin; and<\/li>\n<li>undertake a pilot or project involving a supervised injection site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, we address the issues raised by injection drug use and HIV\/AIDS and HCV in prisons.<\/p>\n<p>We conclude that much more can and must be done to reduce the harms from injection drug use in Canada, particularly as they relate to HIV\/AIDS and HCV.<br \/>\n<!-- Ralf J\u00fcrgens; Injection Drug Use; HIV\/AIDS; and HCV; Brief; House of Commons; Special Committee on; Non-Medical Use of Drugs; criminalization; heroin prescription; correctional facilities --><p class=\"download-link-button\"><a class=\"download-link en\" title=\"Injection Drug Use, HIV\/AIDS, and HCV: Brief to the House of Commons Special Committee on Non-Medical Use of Drugs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/download\/9527\/?tmstv=1776765821\" rel=\"nofollow\">\r\n\tDownload<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"menu_order":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"publication_topics":[147],"publication_type":[170],"publication_language":[184,185],"class_list":["post-357","publication22","type-publication22","status-publish","hentry","publication_topics-drug-policy","publication_type-advocacy","publication_language-english","publication_language-french"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication22\/357","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication22"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/publication22"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication22\/357\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20673,"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication22\/357\/revisions\/20673"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=357"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"publication_topics","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication_topics?post=357"},{"taxonomy":"publication_type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication_type?post=357"},{"taxonomy":"publication_language","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publication_language?post=357"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
