{"id":493,"date":"2002-02-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-28T00:48:53","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2022-09-25T20:52:56","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T00:52:56","slug":"complementary-alternative-healthcare-and-hivaids-legal-ethical-and-policy-issues-in-regulation","status":"publish","type":"publication22","link":"https:\/\/www.hivlegalnetwork.ca\/site\/complementary-alternative-healthcare-and-hivaids-legal-ethical-and-policy-issues-in-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Complementary Alternative Healthcare and HIV\/AIDS: Legal, Ethical and Policy Issues in Regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"The paper:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>discusses the difficulties in defining the precise scope of the field of complementary and\/or alternative medicine;<\/li>\n<li>reviews the available evidence regarding the use of CAM by Canadians generally;<\/li>\n<li>reviews the available evidence regarding the use of CAM by people with HIV\/AIDS, identifying some of the key conclusions to be drawn regarding the prevalence of use, and how and why people with HIV\/AIDS use CAM;<\/li>\n<li>comments on some specific issues relevant to Aboriginal people and traditional Aboriginal healing practices;<\/li>\n<li>provides an analysis of ethical issues raised by the use of CAM, particularly on the part of people with HIV\/AIDS, by applying the principles of non-maleficence, beneficence, respect for personal autonomy, and justice, and draws a number of conclusions as to what is ethically required in law, policy, and practice; and<\/li>\n<li>examines legal and policy issues regarding the appropriate regulatory approach to CAM in the areas of federal regulation of natural health products and provincial and territorial regulation of practitioners; and discusses the issue of practitioner liability in the delivery of complementary\/alternative medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three key themes emerge from the review of the available evidence and the ethical and legal analysis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the need for additional and better research on complementary\/alternative medicine;<\/li>\n<li>the need for improved education and training of health-care practitioners, both conventional and complementary\/alternative, with regard to HIV\/AIDS and complementary\/alternative medicine; and<\/li>\n<li>the need for a regulatory approach to products and practitioners that appropriately balances the ethical considerations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The paper presents a number of conclusions and recommendations in these three key areas.<br \/>\n<!-- Robert Crouch; Richard Elliott; Trudo Lemmens; Louis Charland; Complementary\/Alternative; Health Care and; HIV\/AIDS; Legal; Ethical & Policy Issues in Regulation; complementary and alternative health care; complementary and alternative healthcare; complementary and alternative health-care; complementary and alternative medicine; complementary and alternative therapy; complementary and alternative therapies; complementary and alternative treatment; complementary\/alternative health care; complementary\/alternative health-care; complementary\/alternative healthcare; complementary\/alternative medicine; complementary\/alternative therapy; complementary\/alternative therapies; complementary\/alternative treatment; complementary health care; complementary health-care; complementary healthcare; complementary medicine; complementary therapy; complementary therapies; complementary treatment; alternative health care; alternative healthcare; alternative health-care; alternative medicine; alternative therapy; alternative therapies; alternative treatment; CAM; CAHC; Conventional health care; Conventional health-care; Conventional healthcare; Conventional medicine; Conventional therapy; Conventional therapies; Conventional treatment; unconventional health care; unconventional health-care; unconventional healthcare; unconventional medicine; unconventional therapy; unconventional therapies; unconventional treatment; integrated care; integrative care; traditional healing; traditional healers; holistic; natural; unorthodox; unvalidated; biomedicine; allopathic; Western medicine; Thomas v.
