From June 3-5, 2018 the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network participated in the 48th General Assembly (GA) of the Organization of American States (OAS) held in Washington D.C. Unlike most other OAS GAs, there was no central theme for the this gathering and so many issues were open for discussion. The Legal Network therefore collaborated with other civil society organizations working on similar issues, including LGBTI human rights, sex worker rights, drug use decriminalization, and the decriminalization of over-broad HIV non-disclosure, in order to ensure that these topics were considered by the 35 nations present. In particular, the Legal Network worked with the Sexual and Reproductive Rights coalition and the LESBIANS, GAYS, BISEXUALS, TRAVESTIS, TRANSEXUALS, TRANSGENDER AND INTERSEX (LGBTTTI) Coalition to draft separate submissions for the dialogue of CSO representatives and other actors with heads of delegation, the Secretary General, and the Assistant Secretary General. This dialogue took place on the opening day of the GA and guided the deliberations of the assembly. The submissions were also the basis of intense lobbying over the three-day GA and contributed to the successful adoption of the 10th annual resolution on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.
